Tattoo Safety -- The Important Bits AgainWhen you're deciding which tattooist to go to, check the shop carefully. Look for cleanliness, tidiness and organisation. Don't be afraid to have a good look around. Ask the tattooist to show you the autoclave. Talk to him/her about the cleaning procedures used. Discuss their disposal policy for used needles; they should use a sharps container. Make sure the tattooist always wears disposable gloves. Ink, ointment, water, etc should never be returned to a larger container. Small amounts should be poured out for each client and then disposed of. Make sure you've seen examples of the tattooists work. They should be pleased to show you and you should be given as much time as you want to study them. Ask if you can see the real thing and talk to the person about their tattoo. There are few formal tattooing qualifications but the tattooist may belong to a trade organisation. Find out about that body and what they require of their members. Ask the tattooist if s/he has any First Aid training (if only to make you feel better). Ask about local health service guidelines. If the local government in your area inspects tattoo shops, check that they've recently visited and find out what they thought. Trust your instincts. Don't be afraid to walk away; just be polite. If, for whatever reason, you're not sure then find somewhere else where you feel more comfortable. Go to I Want To Be A Tattooist |
